"It's like herding Cats!" was one of my favorite phrases to use when I had three kids under five.  If you have little kids, you know that getting everyone ready and out the house can be more difficult than herding cats. Add to that the stress of getting dressed up, fixing hair and trying to keep everyone in a good mood for the photoshoot, and the task can seem impossible. That's where I come in. Below are some tips and tricks to make your photoshoot experience as fun and stress free as possible.

Timing

Little kids generally do better in the morning. If that sounds like your child, a morning photoshoot would be a good option. If mornings don't work with your schedule, pick another time during the day when your child is generally in good spirits. For my kids that would have been morning, after nap or right after dinner. Children who are a bit tired or hungry don't typically want to be at a photoshoot.

Another thing to remember about timing, little kids have short attention spans and so shorter sessions typically work better. You would be surprised how many great photos we can get out of a 30 or even 15 minute session!

Location

If you have a little one who likes run wild and free, a photoshoot location next to a busy street or body of water may not be the best idea. When picking a location, consider how well your child follows instruction and whether they will have trouble sticking with the group. If you are going to be stressed about them running off into an unsafe area, I would suggest picking a different location.

Clothing

Nothing can make a person more irritable than uncomfortable clothing. Children are no different. When picking out clothes make sure that your child is comfortable in what they are wearing. Have them try on the outfit for a minute, if they are complaining about the texture or reduced mobility, change the outfit.

For children who are still in diapers, bring an extra outfit. Because stuff happens, and you know what I mean by stuff. While we're on the subject of diapers, diaper covers are something to consider for little girls in dresses and skirts. You don't want the diaper to accidently show and have Bluey photo bombing your perfect family shot.

Come Prepared

Have the diaper bag packed ahead of time with all your usual things plus a few extras. You don't want to have a last minute wardrobe emergency and end up speed packing the bag and forgetting something important. I recommend packing your bag the day before. Be sure to include extra water, snacks, a comb or brush and an extra backup outfit for children who are still in diapers. If you totally forget all these things, DON'T WORRY! I always have an "in case of emergency" bag with items you can use.

Reward Good Behavior

I don't have toddlers anymore, but I still bribe, I mean reward my kids with a treat after the photoshoot. If our photoshoot is at the park, we usually stay and play for a bit (you may need to bring a change of clothes for this). Then we try out a new ice cream shop. We talk about the process beforehand and psych it up, so photoshoot day becomes a fun family outing instead of a chore. Sometimes just the reminder that they'll be getting ice cream in 30 minutes is enough to bring a smile to a child's face.

Take a Deep Breath

Now breathe out. It's going to be ok. When you are at the photoshoot try not to stress about having everyone perfectly placed and making sure your kids smile. That's my job! As mentioned earlier I have lots of games and prompts to get your family relaxed and having fun. There may be some games of peekaboo and tag, family cuddles, a princess smiling contest, or just me being goofy (don't be surprised if I put my shoe on my head).  Sure, it's probably going to be a bit chaotic but you're trying to memorialize your family at this moment in time, and a little bit of chaos is authentic. So, take a deep breath and don't worry. Together we'll capture some beautiful, joyful, authentic, family moments that you can cherish for years to come!
